Five Inexpensive Ways to Spruce Up Your Home Before Selling

Spruce Up Your Home

If you’re selling your home, you want to do what you can to increase its curb appeal and make it appealing to potential buyers. While some homeowners may make expensive renovations, others do not want to spend much money on their house before selling. Here are five inexpensive but effective ways to spruce up your home to help it sell faster.

  1. Clean up the landscaping.

Pull all weeds and trim the shrubbery. Keep the lawn mowed, and put down a seed patch mix on any large bare spots in the lawn. Clean up or replace your porch lights. If you have any rock, gravel, or mulch areas that are messy, fill in gaps with matching material.

  1. Replace the front door.

A new front door is a relatively inexpensive change that can make a big difference. Choose a simple, classic style that suits the home. If you have one or two windows that are bad shape, consider replacing those, as well.

  1. Clean up all clutter.

Mess and disorder can make rooms look smaller, and it can be hard for prospective buyers to look past. Make sure kitchen and bathroom counters are free of clutter. Hiding things in the closets and pantries is not enough, since potential buyers will look in those, too. Be sure to give rooms a good cleaning, including dusting, washing windows, and polishing the appliances.

  1. Make necessary repairs.

Now is the time to take care of all those things you never seemed to have time to fix before. Take care of everyday issues that will turn off both buyers and inspectors. If your roof leaks or has some broken or missing shingles, have that fixed. Replace burned-out lightbulbs, fix leaking faucets, and paint over scuff marks.

  1. Give buyers a blank canvas.

Prospective buyers want to imagine themselves in the house. Help them do so by removing as many personal items and changes as possible. Repaint rooms with neutral colors and remove your most quirky decorations. Keep pets out of the house when it is being shown.

You don’t need a finished basement or a completely remodeled bathroom to sell your home. Looking at it through the eyes of a potential buyer, making minor repairs, and minimizing unattractive details, can go a long way toward making your home ready to sell.
